RE: A perfect HE speaker for a 300b SET amp in a smallish room

I had a similar system with a Fertin 8" field coil sideband driver on open baffle, with subwoofers (sort of) below 100hz and a super tweeter. It was about as good as a cone driver can be IMO.

I once heard the Goodmans Axiom 80 at Hino Audio in Tokyo, side by side with the Tannoy Autograph, which is a giant corner horn using the classic Tannoy 15" dual-concentric driver. Overall, I preferred the Goodmans, as long as the level wasn't too high. You get all the advantages of no crossovers and direct coupling of the amps and drivers.

However, the caveat is: this is best for a smaller room, which does not push the drivers too hard. The Achilles Heel of these systems is limited output. Also, there is something mesmerizing about horns, even at low levels, that cone drivers don't do. It has to do with the very high efficiency and coupling with the air I think -- it is especially pronounced when you multi amp with DHT SETs connected directly to compression drivers.
