Home High Efficiency Speaker Asylum

Need speakers that can rock with just one watt? You found da place.

Been thinking about this lately

I've actually been thinking about corner-placement recently, although not really from a high-eff standpoint. I'm faced with a common problem in the upstairs living room in our small 100-year-old house - absolutely no place to put speakers. The only spot is in the upper corners of the room.

Taking a 'normal' box speaker and sticking it in a corner like this runs into 2 problems as the other responses have outlined

a) bass re-inforcement due to boundary loading
b) reflections from the side walls (and possibly ceiling)

The first is a problem if you put a normal speaker with significant baffle step correction (BSC) into the corner, but if you're designing a speaker for corner placement it's not really that big a deal - you simple handle it in the xover.

The reflections are a bigger problem. A normal wide-dispersion box speaker in the corner will suffer badly from reflections since the cabinet depth will space the drivers out from corner quite a ways, and the distance to the side walls is large enough to create big reflection problems. However, my thinking is that *IF* you can design the speaker so that the drivers hug the boundaries - ideally less than 1/4 wavelength although this isn't possible across the entire spectrum - then with some minimal absorption they 'should' start to behave a lot like drivers in a 90-degree horn. I've been noodling on some arrangements that look promising, although I haven't prototyped anything yet.

My 'main' speakers (although there is no system hooked up to them at the moment) are the Yorkville U15's, and they are also placed directly in the corners of a small room. As others have pointed out, the controlled/limited directivity of the horn makes this a great arrangement. A bit of absorption on the first reflection points, and it works quite well. The fact that they're pro PA cabs and hence don't have any BSC built-in helps as well, as they don't have the bass-boom you'd typically get
