C.S.G.I don't understand how you reach the conclusion that Mark is defending, or making excuses for "...malfunctioning horns...". From a careful reading of his post, I conclude that he saying quite the opposite of this. There is nothing I can read in his post that would assume that either the horn (or direct radiator) examples he uses would have to be malfunctioning to achieve the effects he describes.
You said that "What people fail to realize is that the human brain has a fabulous time-domain inference engine working,,,". Lord Rayleigh demonstrated on the lawn in Cambridge, in the 19th century, that he could identify the exact location of colleagues speaking or sounding tuning forks by pointing at them while blind folded. It's unclear what "people" are being referenced in your remark, but it seems aimed at members of this forum. I don't understant your assertion that reflected sound "...has little to do with imaging...". If this were true, Lord Rayleigh's friends could say "You can point in the direction of my location sir, but you cannot judge my distance from you".
The Haas (or precedence) effect assumes that delayed, or reflected sounds arriving at our auditory apparatus within 20 to 40 msec of the direct sound will be perceived as being part of the direct sound. Assuming that sound travels at approximately 1 ft. per msec, a horn would have to be very large indeed for mouth reflections to confuse our "...brain's ability to properly process directional cues from the source". Direct radiators with closed box or ported box enclosures also depend on a significant amount of stored energy.
I've never heard esso's horns, but they seem to have the "right stuff", however we seem to be coming at that conclusion from quite different reference points.
Mark and Tom: Do you guys have membership cards for the "party"? Can I get one? : )
