Re: Can anyone help with passive xover for BMS 4590 driver?

Hi Todd

This has been interesting and the result unexpected, I guess it’s like the old saying, one can lead a horse to water but you can’t make it drink.

I stopped using the K math about 18 years ago after building several comparative designs which convinced me the L approach was a much better tool (so far as designing a horn for a specific job).

It is perhaps a bit like having a very popular formula that says the circumference of a circle is 2.9 times the diameter, yes the math works and is close enough for many things but it is not as accurate as the less popular formula that says the ratio is 3.14159.
For a long time I never said anything to anyone about the L approach using it as sort of a trade advantage but the constant drone of lore finally made me change my mind.

With programs like hornresp and the ML spread sheet, it should be possible for those willing to question convention to “measure the diameter and circumference” themselves without making sawdust..
Others will be content with what they “know to be true”, things like that the LAB sub cannot work well because it has a heavy driver and isn’t what the horn lore says a horn driver should be and has a design a mile from what the K math says.

Yet, there are those who apparently think it does work, I guess I would be in the believer camp too. 

Speaking of going in a different direction, this coming week I am getting a pair of the new bass horns to do detailed measurements on, these use the exterior space as a good part of the horn (about 2/3 of the total horn volume is “outside” the box). These are called BDEAP for Boundary Dependent External Airpath (pat applied)
In my living room, the prototype horn appears (measures acoustically) to be about ½ wl long with around a 32 Hz cutoff (for one box) but the cool thing is it is smaller than a LAB sub (42 X 42 X 18 in) and is just the first shot at the approach.
Cheers,

Tom
