Re: Portland A7 Stash or Usual ebay shannanigans (RE Particleboard)

I must say, I have firsthand experience with the particleboard Altec used for their later production 828 and 816 cabinets. I had 4 altec 816 horns (like an A7 without the large reflex enclosure) which were the "road" version with vinyl covering and recessed handles, corner protectors etc. Unfortunately, the particleboard that the woofer baffle was mounted to was unable to withstand the weight of the woofer itself when combined with the rigors of actually using the cabinet for mobile sound reinforcement. The baffle cracked and broke loose from the rear of the horn flare, dumping the woofer onto the bottom of the cabinet. In addition, Altec's production must have been getting quite sloppy at that time, since the rear of the cabinet was drilled for approx. 16 screws, but only 4 were ever installed to hold it on! All the other holes were covered over by the vinyl.

I could not believe it was an authentic factory job, but they had genuine altec factory lables inside, and normal altec badging everywhere else.
