Hey-Hey!!!,
ther 828 cabinet behaves like a Bass reflex below 200 Hz and horn loaded above that. The combination yeilds a nice response down to ~40 Hz at efficiency in the mid 100's.My A7-800 lives in the garage, powered by a 20 watt Eico amp. It does a nice job and gets plenty loud. Fortunately there is no reason even to pay 1k of 2004 dollars for something with an 828 cabinet. Beyond the price, the look of the Altec and JBL 4560 is appealing to me at least. I like the look of the HD industrial stuff, and it works better than other stuff I have tried from time to time. I don't have any personal prejudice against direct radiators. Should I?
On the price, $150 for a pair of cabinets, and 300 for a pair of 15" drivers, then add an appropriate HF system( either HE direct radiators or horn loaded, it is fairly wide open in the 500 cps plus club ). I am not quite ready to personally criticize the Altec sectoral horns, but since others are, I just point out that many other sol'ns are out there and all come in at under 1k per pair, a fine thing at that price. Lower depending on the DIY capability of course...
regards,
Douglas
