Maybe you have never heard these in the enviornment they were intended for? When used properly, they can sound very good, indeed. If you use them at home, they will need some tweeking, and also some help at the lowest and highest octaves, but in a mid sized auditorium or theater, they really come into thier own. Personally, I have never heard a VOT 'fart'.
