The 45 is so great for mids, given truly efficient speakers. But I could never get highs, lows, or grunt, even with the A7s. I find modern 2A3s to be the best COMPROMISE. My own 2A3s even run into (shudder) A2 to put out 8 watt peaks. Still, I'm not convinced this will be enough power once I add passive networks and subs, albeit the subs are efficient, too. Tommy Horning (Denmark) makes Lowther-based speakers that are plenty efficient; yet some of his customers pump up to 100 watts into those things while playing orchestral music.I am never surprised when someone prefers a 45 because that natural clarity and immediacy is what it's all about for me, too. Now, if I could only find and afford a speaker that did it all while driven by a 45!
A handfull of designer/builders today do use nice trannies that actually compliment circuit topology and drive speakers you can buy or build at reasonable cost. If you are thinking about more power, it's interesting to see what's going on today. I am no longer so wedded to the past. This is probably the best time in history to be shopping for SETs to drive those HE speakers.
To close, I just want to point out that I was recommending 2A3s for speakers I think that amp drives well, not because I think 2A3s are "best" across the board.
