Home High Efficiency Speaker Asylum

Need speakers that can rock with just one watt? You found da place.

Pitch and perception

You didn't mention which WE drivers you heard, but none I've ever heard had the Lowther's immediacy, which can, for me, often better nice 'stats. Pitch is the area where Lowthers need help, meaning they will sound too "light" without some bass boost. Problem for me is, horns, which can help with bass, introduce other sound effects, including the old "cupped hands" thing, at certain frequencies, which I find very off-putting, so that in the end there is no real improvement in pitch or timbre. So, it's subs or bust for me, unless and until I hear a better way.

As for 45's on Lowthers, the mid-range clarity must be awsome; but I imagine the 45 as best with REALLY efficient speakers, and best crossed over for meaningful bass. It's hard for me to imagine 45s driving a 96dB Lowther and maintaining frequency balance. Again, without having heard the WEs you tout, I would guess that they are a better match for the 45 than any but the most steroidal horn-loaded Lowthers. I'm surprised you don't prefer a 2A3 with the Lowthers, especially the beefy Sovtek or similar. 8 watts is not lost on the Lowther!
