I am with Tre' and Bill. Over the years I have had a lot of fancy wires and amps and such sent to me as gifts or loaners for testing. I gave Mr. Pass a couple drivers and a pair of my speakers when he developed the First Watt F1 as an example. I've heard all the First Watt amps and owned an X150 or two. No need to list all the stuff but it's a "lot".
There is no doubt with certain combinations of pre and amps IC's can sound "different". I think it is as Bill said, a matter of resistance, capacitance and inductance in this case.
Speaker wire of sufficient gauge is all that is needed is the conclusion I've reached over the years.
Here is one example of why......at our Horn Shoppe party each year the room fills up with equipment, none of which is not "high end". We spend 3 days listening. Everybody brings their "favorite wires" and the dollar amount of those wires reaches ridiculous amounts. All the guys want to show off their stuff including their "fancy wires".
The speaker wire I use is the wally world 16 gauge 3 wire extension cord. Keep in mind I have some very expensive speaker wires from several manufacturers but guess what? It's in a pile in the back room.
Year before last Jim Dowdy brought his GM70 amp over for the second time. Of the 35 or so guys that were here everyone agreed it was the best sounding amp we had ever heard regardless of type or cost. Not a single person disagreed. It stole the show and those two weekends a lot of stuff did not get hooked up, no one wanted to pull the GM70 out.
When Jim got here before the party and we hooked it up we used my wally wire. Both times. Not a single person even hinted that we needed "better wire" even though there may have been 10k worth of fancy stuff sitting there! The Wally wire was never removed and replaced.
If you ask anyone who was here if they thought using "better wire" would have improved the sound they will fall over laughing.
A side affect of those weekends was to destroy the notion that speaker wire is "all important". Many minds were changed and a lot of fancy wires were sold following those weekends and wally world sold many extension cords to replace them.
Just anecdotal information.
