I use 16ga inside, with woofers, 20ga with tweeters, and whatever is appropriate for the length outside, for less than 1dB insertion loss and adequate current capacity headroom.

Light gauge wires could alter damping factor, especially with tube amps, but for every person who thought that a good idea two would say it wasn't. Chances are all three would be wrong. Read this:
