I recall one time that someone tried different types and guages of wires for wiring up Lowther speakers (probably to SET amps). It was their opinion that either 24 to 32 guage coated wire (magnet wire) was the best (better than heavier guage wires). A number of people discussed why this could be so. A couple of the theories were interesting. First, Lowthers are relatively efficient so they don't need much current, and many people are not trying to get bass out of them anyways (maybe they were being high-passed at 150 hz). Second, the speaker/amp interaction might benefit from some series resistance. For example, there is a reactance by the speaker to the signal from the amp which also sends a signal back to the amp. The series resistance by thinner wire may help dampen this interaction.
These are some claimed theories to what others said they heard, so don't quote me, but I am just adding some discussion to the mix.
Hey Bill, what guage wire to you use to wire up your woofers, both inside and outside the speakers?
