Harshness and brightness can be caused by several factors. Already mentioned were caps in the crossover. Also; non-Altec diaphragms. Some of these sound dull; others harsh.
Blown HF diaphragms; some solid state amps.I have a pair of 604-8k's that I replaced the caps in the xover, and run with a pair of MC-30's. The sound is incredible, and is the antithesis of bright or harsh.
I recently picked up a pair of Valencias, and did a quick hook up with a 70s Kenwood amp. They sounded "shouty" and a bit harsh with that amp, but hooking up a pair of Eico HF-30s (ppp 6bq5s) made all the difference.
As per usual; YMMV; DSFDF (different strokes for different folks)
