and like them *very* much. These use a rather complex crossover much like the famous Mastering Lab crossovers.I believe that much of what you're describing is a combination of a couple of issues:
* Old caps in your existing cossover. If you're still using the standard Altec crossover, these need to be addressed.
* Ideally, you should consider updating the crossovers with new ones.
* Reconing of the speakers. I had my 604s fully reconed when I got them. Despite the fact that they looked and sound ok, I shipped them to Great Plains Audio. I'm glad I did as they sounded far better once redone. Solo piano is particurlarly lifelike in reproduction now.
* Recharging the Alnico magnet. This is normally done by most reconers but can be done separately. Since you don't know *exactly* what kind of life your speakers have led, they could use this service. Do a search here and at GPA's forum for discussions on the details of whys and hows.
BTW, I have a local friend whose Model 19s needed a reconing, too. He purchased them but they sounded a bit muddled even at low volumes. Turns out that the spider had sagged over the past 30 years and the voice coils were rubbing ever so slightly in the gap. He's quite happy with them now and I can report that they do, indeed, produce sound in a more effortless way.
My point in sharing this is that almost all older speakers need attention due to age. Once done properly, they can compete with current technology in speakers - well, maybe not in size.....
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
David
