Re: Are TAD transducers worth the premium costs?

Yes, TAD 4000 series compression drivers and 1600 series woofers are outstanding professional products with precise technical specifications.
The compression drivers in the above series have a pure metallic beryllium diaphragm which weighs a mere 1 gram for a diameter of 4"! Their magnetic circuits are close to 2 Tesla whether powered by Alnico or NIB (Neodymium-Iridium-Boron) magnets. These two factors alone place them in a class by themselves as concerns response speed on transients and impulses. Their sensitivity is clearly above 100 db (110 db for the TAD-4001, between about 600 Hz and 15 KHz ). Of course, the chosen horn to mate with any of these drivers must have an adequate expansion rate and be made of inert material. Under such conditions you can spare the use of a tweeter and avail yourself of the superior transparency of a two-way system.

The 15" TAD-1601a,b and c woofers have a 98-102 db sensitivity over about a range of 40-1000 Hz and are good mates for the above drivers.
Bass reflex or better horn loading is recommended.

A 2nd order passive Xover and L-pad, although delicate to tune, will pair-up compression driver and woofer to form a speaker system that will outlive any forseable fashion trend. Depending on room and, particularly, budget size you can cotemplate bi-amping and/or using 2 woofers per channel.

I haste to state that I have no commercial link with Pionner/TAD. I am an audiophile, strictly speaking, who owns TAD products and appreciate their advanced technology and beautiful professional finish.
