Home High Efficiency Speaker Asylum

Need speakers that can rock with just one watt? You found da place.

Re: More about killer amp. please...

I'm starting to think that some pieces of gear have special qualities and we can hear the potential of something if it has special qualiites.

I know someone with a pair of WE speakers and he has learned really how to bring out their attributes greatly.

I've heard them on a few occasions and I don't have anything remotely like those speakers. But I'm not really any worse off none the less. Because there are alot of possibilities. Lot of esoteric sound variables. And the stuff I'm into to me perhaps has even more potential.

I've been pursuing the sound of amps with certain vintage transformers, as you probably know by now. And now I have heard something in a particular 45 combo that I hear something extraordinary.

I'm pretty sure that this is something really special. I believe some things a priori can be known, and I know this about this amp.

I can say this about the sound. No matter how interesting any other amp I have is, and no matter how it just sounds like live and in the room, everything I have is still a little tied to coming from an audio set-up. This is the first sound that almost seems like it is able to detach itself from the audio equipment and speakers, and just be in the room almost seemingly Independent of the speakers. It is like the sound has broken away from the stereo, and taken on a life of its own.

If you still have your lowthers and 2a3 amp, you have pursued something in that sound. I know the potential of lowthers and I'm a little familar with the 2a3. There 's alot of great possibilites with lowthers. Their articulation match extremely well with the harmonics and richness of the amps I have here with the vintage transformers.

My friend recently built a parallel 300b amp (2 300b tubes per channel). He didn's use the usual vintage transformers, but some other vintage ones. I only got to hear it briefly before the person he built it for took it. It is local and I can get a chance to hear it again. I did here something special with lots of potential.

So I would consider a parallel set amp perhaps with the usual vintage transformers we use, or perhaps some other vintage, or perhaps with some really high quality current opts. My preference would certainly be for the first option.

I don't know if you get double the watts with a parallel amp. I think it is about 15 watts for the 300b. I do know you continue to get the special set sound.

If I was in your situation, the answer for me would be what I am suggesting. I would suggest this:

a parallel 300b with 6sn7/26 drivers and fi primer circuit for the 6sn7s with certain vintage transformers. 15 watts.

if you needed more you could try an 845 and get about 25 watts. I've neve heard the 26 with the 845 tube, but it might wake it up a bit.

The 26 is a dht that articulates the 300b more.

And it wouldn't cost that much to build, but it is a unique and special project.
