The key characteristics of single driver wide range speakers, regardless of loading methodology employed (BR, TQWT, F. Horn or B. Horn, etc) are purported to be seamless coherency, superb dynamics and "to-die-for" resolution. In modern multi-way speakers, the Merlin VSM is one model that is often brought up when these characterisitics are being discussed. Maybe this would be a good benchmark to gauge whether the more simplified designs offer more than modern multi-ways with high tech drivers. And, since you mentioned it, the Magnepan 3.6 when properly set up is a good benchmark for most any type speaker design. It may not be king in any one attribute but, it's rich and delicate sounding ribbon certainly sets a lofty goal in the midrange/treble areas. And, the rich reverberant field that this speaker produces exudes a "live" vibrancy often lacking in box type speakers.
