Hi Magnetar,I will add my two cents worth. I am an amateur, and not an engineer.
ALL ACTIVE EQ's ( 4001, etc.) place the roll off components in the negative feedback loop circuit, and it doesn't matter if its an OP AMP or a nice sounding Triode amplifying device, ........whenever you put REACTIVE components inside a NFB Loop, you get Crummy Crummy LOW-FI TIN-EAR sound. So, none of the "actives" will ever have a chance at real quality. You heard that in your system I think.
A passive (4004) avoids this, .......as one can imagine.
I have two 4004's and I am currently in the final stages of finishing a triode Line Stage ( Type 45 tube) that will be step-down transformer coupled out and do a 600 ohm PASSIVE line-level biamp - for a large modified Ubangie RCA Theatre system I have. ( Two 15's, in a front firing horn.)
I have been told by Alan Sides ( Oceanway Recording Studio owner) that these bass horns have a peak at 160 HZ so I plan to use the 600 / 600 White 4004 on the BASS horns ONLY, and leave the tweeter horn ( RCA MI-9595, a 90X40) driven by a vintage/early RCA MI-1443 H.F. Field Coil driver, totally UNPROCESSED by any White EQ ...for PURITY RETENTION to the tweeter horn.
Alas, I am about a month away from finishing my 600 ohm Type 45 Line Stage / Passive Bi-Amp, and probably two or three months away from getting the RCA horn system installed and running, so I cannot give you listening impressions with the 4004 EQ's yet, but I did want to share my thoughts and plans with Asylum readers and solicit helpful commentary. Its good to exchange audio thoughts and approaches.
