the western electrics are "753cs which use a 713a compression driver with 32a horn, d-173048 crossover and the 15inch is a ks-12004(which i am told was made by jensen for we)."maybe that makes more sense to you than to me.
i know it's not fair to make a comparison. the issue here is that the guy put his system together just to excell in voices.
when i heard it i abandoned all the other variables and considerations i would normally use, variables like immediacy, soundstage, etc., and i just listened to the voices. they were in the room.
the speakers are hardly good for much else perhaps. he said they only go down to 100 or 80 cycles and are not really good for rock.
perhaps if i spent more time with the speakers i would not have preferred them (but i doubt that) the pairng of the two: amp and speakers, were necessary to reach a certain level of audio greatness.
for me, it was one of those special life experience moments in audio which made an indelible mark on me. i'm happy even to be able to recognize greatness when i hear it.
regarding the lowthers that i have, i get a great deal of listening pleasure from them and i want to pursue lowthers more. they are more rewarding than anything else i have at this time. i also know for sure that i have not mazimized the lowther sound or potential by any means, but i can prety much grasp it.
i understand what you are saying about pitch and i use a sub with them. the 45 that i have is very nice, maybe with the vintage transformers that it has, it can touch into some of that greatness of the we era. the 45 smooths the pitch out also. i'm listening pretty nearfield to the lowthers right now by necessity and the 45 can handle to situation very well.
i think pitch is the same problem with the fostex's? but a different type of pitch problem. they come in sounding a bit high. the sound also seems to reverberate a bit too in the abby chamber. ther amp i'm using with them is perhaps a bi more mellow.
i prefer the lowthers to a pair of oris horns i heard. but i'd also like to go back to that house and hear how they may do voices also, having been enlightened by we experience. i'm not too experienced at this point in hearing horns and the experience that you are talking about.
