Those plots are 2D solutions of the wave equation for a single frequency sine wave. The quantity plotted is velocity potential, ie, the velocity potential at a point in the mesh determines what color is plotted there. The shading is interpolated between these points, but the mesh is pretty fine in this case. So the 'coherent bundles of energy' are actually compressions and rarefications of air.I just did another sim for 10kHz with the same 4" radius, and the wavefront does start to breakdown. I was thinking about this yesterday, but I guess the guys designing the old WE horns like the 15A really knew what they were doing.
