Re: Unity Patent

Hi Mike,
As I see it, a unity style horn has all the strengths of a 'standard' multi-way horn system (like Edgar's Titan) but improves on such systems by being coaxial (without significant interference between frequency ranges, unlike a typical coax speaker), having lower throat distortion, and having a more uniform dispersion pattern. I think the coaxiality is a big one; mine is not time-aligned at the moment, but it still sounds better to me than my old 4-way horn system. I suppose some people might not like the unity's sound as it doesn't interact with the room nearly as much as typical speakers do. For the same reason, the room has less influence on the sound you hear which to me is a good thing.

A weakness is that it's more complicated to design - you have standard horn design issues along with trying to get all the frequency sections time-aligned.

I imagine Mark Seaton will jump in here eventually and tell you about what Sound Physics Labs is using them for and where they're going with them.

John
