RE: "Anyone Hear These?" Every Day Fot 15 Years!

The 19's are such a great looking speaker with the horn in that "floating" cabinet, separate-looking, but of course open to the bottom. Kick Drum does hit you in the chest and the organ pedal notes are better shown in the soft passages of the Saint-Saens 3 for example but I never was able to really love the upper mids and treble of the Altec CD's, whether 802, 806, or 902.

When I belt out the Fz Bass Trombone opening of the 4th movement, Shostakovich 5th or whisper the pp chorale of the Brahms First that goes well below the Staff, the recording through the 4 Pis sounds more like me.

The 4Pi cabinet is relatively small, 18.5X26.5X14.5 in what Wayne calls an "over-damped" configuration so raising them is a requirement. The B&C DE-250 in Wayne's true catenary H290C was a revelation to me after years of trying all the 1" Altecs.

I once built what I called an homage to the 19 with 806 and 811 (before anyone asks, yes I did cut and damp the vanes) but a spare pair of 2226's didn't much care for the larger cubic footage. They went lower but lost the definition of the low bass found in the 4 Pi. I couldn't afford to buy the real thing, Altec 416's, but mine were a valuable exercise in book matching raw leaf veneer :-).
