Home High Efficiency Speaker Asylum

Need speakers that can rock with just one watt? You found da place.

My experience......

I went through a similar phase about 20 years ago.....

I started with small Fostex & Phillips "fullrange" drivers. I built many cabs, blh's, BK-16's from the old Fostex plans, open baffles, BR's, and ultimately settled on "BiB's" ( bigger is better ) for the 6" Fostex's. I pushed them with early class D, SS, Tubed PP and SET amps (Bottlehead Paramours). The Bibs, to my ears sounded the best and were very easy to make.

If I was to do it all over again, I would've bought a set of Altec Duplexes or Tannoy Concentrics, build a large BR and/or MLTL cabs and called it quits. I am from the school where I put most of my $$$ into speakers first, then amps, then everything else in the chain.....

I currently have Altec Model 19's and use a PP kit amp ( see my profile). I am about to build cabs for my 604's and will get ready to refurb my 19's.

You can follow the advice here from others, but I really think it is quite a jump to diy some speakers ( speakers with a limited bandwidth ), buy tweeters, and have a tubed amp built to your specifications, to which you really don't know what the results will be in your own listening environment, other than what you might have read/seen/heard on the net. Those results can vary WILDLY.

That can get expensive and time consuming.... But hey, it's a hobby and I am not going to tell you exactly how to go down the road, but I'll be glad to give some advice along the way if you care to ask.

Many here are offering their advice too from many years of trial and error/experience, so I would consider what they have to say. I do not think anyone here would lead you down a wrong path.

Have fun!
