I'll back that one up! I have a 26 preamp with battery filaments and C4S current source. A friend wanted something similar but not so hard to use. I drew up a design for his pair of 56's that was basically the same setup as my 26.When comparing them it is very difficult to hear any difference. The 56 did have lower noise at 60hz than the 26 even though the 26 was battery powered.
My 26 uses 2V lead acid "D" cells on the filament with .5ohm droping resistors. I found that I can plug in 30's with no mods. The 30 has a 2V heater but only draws 60 ma so the droping resistor dosen't drop anything significant. The 30 biases up the same, has slightly higher Rp (10,000K) and slightly higher mu (9). Sounds great, and looks like a 2/3 scale 26.
