I can understand you being very attached to the Yamamoto, it seems a very desirable amp and I would love to hear one some day on an appropriate speaker. The problem is, that may be a real challenge as I really didn’t like it on the few speakers to date I heard it with – all full rangers in pipes, admittedly speakers I didn’t care for in general. I will use the 45 again but it will be with more efficient speakers than Altec 604’s or in a bi-amp configuration.I love the 604’s though and feel they are definitely worth finding the right amp for – even if it means it isn’t a 45. I never cared much for the 2A3 in the past but the 2A3 amp I now use seems a great match for these speakers and I really don’t think I’m giving up anything to the 45, just a different flavor with more appropriate drive. Same goes for 300B, I always thought the 45 beat it handily but I have recently heard one on 604E’s that sounded fantastic, maybe the best yet with these speakers so I am building the same circuit to try it out for myself.
45 amps and Altec 604’s are great pieces in the right systems, they just don’t have the right synergy as a pairing for me.
