Re: What's a good compromise cabinet for Beta 12LTA? Karlson - KUP HFP

Freddy, I considered the goodman's cabinet on TL's site to get an idea, then came up with the largest dimensions that would cut out of two sheets of maple plywood and match the height of a cabinet I wanted to set between the speakers. It appeared that the volume wasn't all that critical, and I used an old approach of tuning the cabinet at or slightly below the driver fs. I used the swag method for guessing at the volumn occupied by the driver, notch filter, and stuffing/damping material. I used a layer of bubble wrap over the inside, filled the bottom up the the port opening with packing peanuts (these ideas are ala Hammer dynamics, which as I am sure you know uses a variation of this driver). I stapled a thick felt pad (3/8) to the pack panel behine the driver, and then hung a curtain of the same felt from top of cabinet to top of the port opening. I do think they could use somemore damping behind the driver, as well as better bracing, as I think some of the shoutiness is coming from the cabinets themselves. I placed the notch filter in the middle of the packing peanuts, in the cabinet bottom. I did dry the notch/crossover from the hammer site, and decided that a simple notch filter was the best approach. I will say, at low levels, and close (texas headphones) in my office, these things are on a par with anything I have heard, in particular these drivers offer a very dynamic presentation. They may not be the last word in imaging. For a while, I used them in a home theater arrangment, driven by se 300b amps. Most people who heard them left compliaining about how lifeless their out of the box systems sounded!
