Thanks for your response which is very interesting. It stimulated me into downloading the files myself and, yes, MP3 24/96. I have not seen that before and wonder if there are commercial releases in that format. But I guess the compression algorithm can be just as easily applied to 24/96 as it can to 16/44.1.
I will listen later today. However, as Ivan303 posts, it is not necessarily possible to play them blind as many bit perfect players (including mine) will display not only bit depth and sample rate but for compressed files the codec employed and bit rate. Fortunately that is only shown in one of the optional views so I won't use that for the test. Of course if you just click the file on a computer and open "Properties" you may also be able to easily deduce which ones are compressed.
