I guess I'm guided by the music I enjoy (all genres).
Like some, I've become somewhat jaded by the shifting sands of digital reproduction, which since CD and SACD, have lacked easily recognisable standards that aren't constantly changing (rather like consumer IT). So I refer to the music I buy, new and old. With that in mind, it seems I am safe with my 1704K DAC for quite a while longer.
The only thing that is sure is the time spent listening, and its irreplaceable value. That's never coming back. Rather like the 1704K. I don't mind adding to this DAC in my system, but will likely not replace it. I have too many audiophile regrets already!
