You have touched on the most extreme example of an awful recording and made a valid judgment. No shame in that.
Because they are so highly rated by most critics, I have owned those Kleiber LvB's in various formats, always hoping that some magical new process will make them listenable. Every one is a disappointment, and I remind myself that many other perfectly suitable performances exist with sound that is worlds better than that noise on DG, so I should just stop trying or caring. A "little harsh"? It is possibly the worst sound I have heard from any modern source, certainly among the worse symphonic recordings, and I cannot recognize it as music.
How could you even tell if the tweeter was fixed while listening to it? It makes good tweeters sound broken!
Peace,
