New high resolution SACD releases, players and technology.

addendum and critical advice

Abe did the math correctly, but based on faulty input data.

The original and replacement lasers did not last average 4 years. All of them failed to perfectly play hybrids after only two or so years. Redbook and single layer SACD's were never a problem. I endured listening to the less than optimal configuration for quite some time before servicing. Sometimes a hybrid disc would play fine, other times it would skip a few seconds of music, rarely but shockingly it would lose tracking and emit a god awful loud noise that sounded a lot like a needle skimming across vinyl. Talk about analog sound! Eventually the machine could not even initialize some hybrid discs in either redbook or SACD mode.

IMPORTANT for Marantz owners, possibly others:

The last time the machine was serviced, at my expense, the tech adjusted the firmware of the player so that hybrid SACD's would not play automatically, but rather default to redbook layer, which usually played without a problem. I appreciated this strategy as a way to conserve the laser for when I really wanted to listen critically, in which case the SACD layer was accessed via the front panel/remote "Sound Mode" button. With this new laser installed by me, the firmware update remains in effect and I must select SACD when playing hybrids. Single layer SACD's play fine, and always have, even when the laser was getting finicky.

If you're paying to have your machine serviced by a competent technician or you have access to a service manual that describes how it's done, you should consider tweaking the firmware to default to CD mode unless commanded otherwise. Listening to SACD is not always necessary if it saves a bit of laser life.
