Difficult to answer this question properly as it depends on the individual, and Japan is a surprisingly diverse and individualistic society despite stereotypes of Japanese in the Western media.
I am sure SACD has a loyal and dedicated follower base, and both HMV Japan and Amazon Japan have a strong SACD catalog (I've purchased some European SACDs from Japan that I've never seen elsewhere, not even in the UK).
But don't expect your typical Akihabara store or Yodobashi to focus on high end. That would be like expecting to see high end at Frys in the US or Harvey Norman in Australia.
I did not see the ultra high end stores that are typically found in Singapore or Hong Kong, but I'm sure they are around somewhere. In Japan, these kind of stores will not be located at busy shopping districts and are unlikely to advertise heavily so you need a local to take you there.
I think something like the SCD-XE800 will appeal to the Japanese, and may even attract younger quality-conscious listeners on a budget. Japanese are not into 5.1 because they don't have the space and a dedicated listening room large enough to house a 5.1 system is probably out of reach for most Japanese.
