Hi-res might have been a commercial success if it came out, say, 5 years earlier than it did. It missed its market and the world had already shifted. At the time, CD sales had already started dropping, and home theater and video games were taking over the consumer electronics market. It was like trying to sell a new high performance CRT monitor when the market had moved towards to flat panel displays.
