I do not dispute that translating the original master whether it be on tape or hard-drive to the Redbook or SACD format is an art which many production facilities have yet to master.( no pun intended) Consequently, I have heard many CDs that sound very, very good. Probably as good as is possible with the lower resolution technology.
SACD format has the capability of resolution 4 times greater than Redbook CDs so at least potentially they are an improvement. Personally I have never heard what I would label as poor sound from an SACD. Even old jazz recordings, marginally recorded with tape hiss to boot have a well focused sound-stage and air in the mix. You can hear the venue and the acoustics therein.
The bottom line is IMO that the recording production and performance which usually go hand in hand are the determining factor to whether the music is a pleasant experience or not.
