Garbage in garbage out

Sure I would love to have an SACD recording of U2's HTDAAB as well. However, yesterday was the first time I got to listen to HTDAAB on a decent system (Naim CDS3 CDP; Hovland 100 preamp; Pass X350 vs. dehavilland 845's, and VSA VR4jr's etc.) Truth be told, with the Pass SS amp the disc was almost unlistenable. I have been primarily listening to it on my ipod up to now. With the dehavilland SET amp's the disc was somewhat better although their 30 watts couild not easily produce the necessary SPL's ... Yet, with either amp the disc is obviously poorly recorded. I guess it is OK on an U2-branded iPod. Fortunately, not all modern bands (mainstream or alternative) are so poor. In fact, most of what I listen would lend it self to high-rez (e.g. Ryan Adams, Radiohead, Lucinda WIlliams, Wilco, Beck, Coldplay, etc.) However, with a decent redbook CDP, I could easily live with the CD only version in many cases.
