Karajan follows in the footsteps of Furtwangler only in the sense of leadership of the Berlin Philharmonic. Stylistically they are polar opposites. Furtwangler is flexible and spontaneous, often with less than perfect orchestral execution. Karajan is stiff and rigid, and all about perfection in the orchestral sound.
