DSD was 'intended' for archiving of old analog tapes.DSD wasn't developed for archiving reasons. That was only printed in the marketing folders alongside the other hogwash.
DSD will never be accepted as 'the' archival format for similar reasons why mp3 isn't. ( No real difference between removing low level signals and masking them with high noise levels...)
Since 99.9% of the digital material is still archived as pcm it just isn't practical to depend on material archived in dsd.
It wasn't a matter of ad converter technology. ( At the time dsd was actually a downgrade from existing 1 bit converters running at 256*fs )Someone at Sony with real insight didn't want to risk the flimsy analog tapes yet again just to satisfy the dsd marketing department.
Let's see Brubeck
Stereo sacd only
Stereo/mc only
Stereo/mc and hybridAnd now:
Stereo/mc hybrid sourced from 'original' analog master. You lot can buy these old Jazz disc's all over again to satisfy the dsd fetish.
What a cracker.
