Seems like there are a lot of variations on the theme.1. DSD master, DSD editing and processing, SACD final
2. PCM master either hi or low or in-between rez, PCM editing and processing, SACD final
3. DSD master, PCM editing and processing, SACD final
4. Analog master,PCM transfer, PCM editing and processing, SACD final
5. Analog master, DSD transfer, DSD editing and Processing, SACD final
6. Analog master, DSD transfer, PCM editing and processing, SACD final
It seems like the least frequent recordings are number 1 and 5, at least no elucidation about the chain on any of the SACD's that I have seen except the ones indicating DSD or PCM hi rez masters.
To me DSD mastered to Redbook on my sysem sounds better than the two channel SACD of the same source. I don't know why, but it seems to be the case. However, I have no idea of the intermediate chain.
It is clear from listening to vinyl sources that some SACD remixes may have been remixed in PCM before transfer because they have lost a lot of depth and sound more brittle than the vinyl versions.
Even if you were to concede that a pure process DSD master, DSD edit and DSD mixdown to SACD were better than anything else (and I do not believe this), then it is going to be hard to tell until all of the intermediaries in the recording and mixing chain are elucidated on all discs.
A lot of people seem to be listening to hi rez PCM transferred to SACD and talking about it as if it actually is a DSD/SACD.
