I find the comment by the neurosurgeon interesting for two reasons. Both SACD and 16/44 are converted to a continuous analogue wave form by the DAC. Also, if the neurons only fire at 10,000 times per second then how do we hear frequencies obove 10Khz.Theoretically the high sample rate of SACD and/or high res PCM should preserve more of the original signal particularly the lower level harmonics at higher frequencies. What I hear between CD and SACD is what I call a richer more full sound. It has more detail without being bright or harsh.
Listen to the first track of La Stravaganza on Channel Classics.
The Violin solo between 40 seconds and 1 minute is a good example. On the CD layer the violin has a harsh edge or brightness to it. When I play the SACD layer, that glare is gone and the tone of the violin is more pure.On well recorded and mastered discs the differneces are more subtle than obvious.
Cheers.
