Hi Alex,
I own the Philips and had the XA777es in my system for over a week. I preferred the Sony. It presents more info: greater detail, better soundstaging & imaging, darker background. Gave up a bit in liquidity and perhaps coherence. I would describe the Philips as warm, the Sony as dark.
Both stock: used with CJ's PV14 and MV2250, Vandersteen 2CIs.
The comparison made me want better sound than either, so, with financial considerations in play, I sent the Philips out to Modwright. Should be back next week.
