New high resolution SACD releases, players and technology.

I agree the Colin Davis SACD version of Mahler's Symphony No. 8 on RCA was terrible

I only bought it as I had a 25% coupon for "Borders" and It was cheap and one of the few SACDs Borders had that I didn't have yet. I sold it on eBay, it was really, really bad. RCA forgot how to record at the end of the Living Stereo era. Why their engineer's don't listen to their old recordings to try to figure out what the hell they are doing wrong I will never know!

I also didn't like the poor sonic quality of the Naxos Sibelius/Sinding Violin Concertos SACD and I do love the Sibelius Violin Concerto, the Sinding was new to me. I just could not overlook the poor sonic quality.

The Shostakovich Hamlet Film Music on Naxos SACD was actually listenable and enjoyable, though not the best sonically. I replaced it when I found the Bernard Herrmann version on London/Decca LP.

One of my friends Ted says I am way too picky about sound and he has unsuccessfully tried to turn me onto historical Mono LPs of great conductors of the 1940's and 1950's. I was never able to hear around the lack of decent sound.

I was excited about the Naxos Amercian Classics series until the third playing of to the 20 or so I purchased when Tower Records had them on sale for $5.00 each. I am easily seduced by bargains and works I have never heard by 20th century "tonal" composers I love. I was excited to an extremely high degree and to be honest I was even more disappointed by the poor performances than the poor sound. Musically the Barber series with female conductor Marin Alsop was my favorite but stills "where's the bass?" especially needed the wonderful Medea Suite!

Naxos has been the biggest musical disappointment in my entire life! The promise of wonderful wrongfully neglected works and then to have them delivered in poor performances and horrible sound is totally unforgivable!

The Delos Amercian Series while still having the problem of low resolution PCM are excellent performances and do have deep bass so necessary for orchestral music. Naxos has just licensed some recordings from the Delos Amercian Series to be issued on their American Classics series, hopefully they will leave the deep bass intact and no screw up the sonics.
