"...the consensus worldwide appears to be that the Mercury Living Presence CDs issued in the late eighties and early nineties generally ARE superior to the SACD remasters that came out a few years ago."
This is totally false and you can prove it to yourself with your own Mercury Living Presence SACDs and CDs. If "HiFi+" says this is so they are not to be trusted!
Basically the Mercury Living Presence SACDs have "warmer" bass, "smoother midrange", and further extended delicate highs, especially high percussion instruments plus warmer ambiance with less tape hiss than the CD versions. Plus the CD versions, which I checked out of our local library are very forward and shrill sounding in the midrange. Also the tape hiss on the SACD and LP versions seems to be divorced from the music and easy to tune out yet on the CD versions the tape hiss is imbedded in the music and impossible to ignore.
The Mercury Living Presence CDs I find unlistenable on all players I have ever owned including my new "CD" friendly Yamaha universal.
The Mercury Living Presence SACDs are almost as good as the Speaker's Corner 180-Gram LPs but the Classic Records 180-Gram LPs are the absolute best.
Ironically I find many of the original Mercury Living Presence LPs a little on the bright side; this is due to a higher than normal cutting angle Mercury used.
Also an honorable mention should be made of the Bose Test Record that came out in 1965 mastered by Bert White of Mercury Living Presence Recordings.
Over all I like the Mercury Living Presence SACDs as played back in 2-channel stereo. I don't like multi-channel so someone else will have to comment on the three channel mixes.
Please don’t buy into HiFi+’s BS, as docw says the CD layer has the Wilma Cozart mixes plus you can also compare the CD version to the high resolution layer of the SACD version for yourself!
