New high resolution SACD releases, players and technology.

Well, your opinion is not shared

I think that most people who hear the difference regard SACD as "better" than redbook if one takes into account the possiblity of certain "bad" implementations of some SACD recordings. For example the SACDs from Peter Gabriel's SO are pretty much recognized as being "better" than the same remasters in Redbook.

Folks are right in that you can't generalize too much. But the format process yields better results. It doesn't mean that redbook can't be greatly improved to get close to SACD with a high end or SOTA Redbook player. But if the recording is OK on SACD and OK on Redbook, a $5K SACD player will beat a $5K turntable and a $5K Redbook player. This pretty much falls in line with Dave's generalization's posts below.

Now, you can be frustrated with SACD's lack of adoption, but those reasons will be different than the quality. A lot of sales of "products" are shifting from teenagers to old people. So, us old people are going to buy old music, and the "remaster" fad is on, big time. Old people are going to be more likely to sit down and listen to music for its own sake, and we'd be more likely to spend more money on a higher quality cd, - like an SACD. So, Sony was stupid. They could've drastically reduced the licensing and the cost of the SACD recording equipment. This would've led producers and record companies to go down the path of remastering more old music for old people on to SACD. This would increase the potential for better recordings, and more money will be made by all... I have to admit to having a lot of anger at Sony for pulling another BETA on us, it's that same kind of thinking/production/marketing that has shut down an already questionable product, especially today, where it's only the very few who even listen to music for its own sake, much less interested in the quality of what they're listening to..

Elton John GYBR SACD, - much better than the old CD and vinyl IMO..
Steely Dan, GAUCHO, - much better on SACD than on redbook
Peter Gabriel, already mentioned..
Kraftwerk... big improvement....
Sonny Rollins.... big step up....
