Robert, since i have no experience with master tapes i have no opinion regarding how they compare with vinyl or dsd. i have heard it said that dsd can be similar to a mic feed.....or a master tape. maybe.
i do listen to live music and obviously i know the human voice. so i have a reference above all (at least from my perspective).
the RIAA LP curve is not inherently distorted; except if the mastering engineer adds distortion....not all do.
OTOH most vinyl playback gear is colored. but not all. and that is the rub.
i have 4 cartridges, and they all sound different. i have owned and tried many phono stages; some of which are colored. neutrality is a choice with vinyl......just not an easy or cheap one.
i'm not saying that vinyl is as clean as digital; but it's darn close at the top of the food chain. there is no 'vinyl' sound per se except when the gear adds it. not all gear does.
that is just my opinion.
