For many labels the 2 channel mix is an afterthought and I believe that a lot of them could be better. Also microphones are set up for optimal pickup for surround sound, the optimum position for 2 channel stereo my not be the same.

And with 2 channel stereo you can use as little as 1 stereo microphone like was done on Cisco Music release of Sheffield Labs Clair Marlo SACD. I really prefer 3 or less microphones for 2 channel stereo. Telarc, Delos, Bis and others spend the time to create realistic imaging and sonics in 2 channel stereo. Not everyone is willing to spend the time and commitment.
