i have been using dynaquad passive surround since the 70s, adjusted so that the rears are barely perceptible on conventional stereo. the ambience retrieval adds to the experience greatly imho and i wouldnt want to be without it.

i never readjust the rear level for movies or any other mode and it works fine with vinyl, cd, tv, video, and sacd. i dont have to dick around with bass management and thats a big plus.

even though my sony ns500v has all the requisite ouputs for surround, i doubt they will ever be used by me.

the problem with surround is the temptation for some to feel like theyre getting their moneys worth and have the rear levels up at distracting levels. most people coming into my listening room never notice that there is surround until i mention it.
