...I live in an apartment with a medium-sized living room - about 15' by 12' by 7.5'. The apartment design is such that most people set up their living rooms one way (8 out of 10 of my neighbors). But that way does not allow decent surround sound...and I have a full complement of living room furniture to accomodate...an eight foot counch, two easy chairs, a side table and lamp, a coffee table, four bookcases, and two sizeable equipment rack/cabinets.By carefully noodling the system, I've come up with an arrangement that looks good, works well for socializing, and comes very close to an ITU setup (the rear speakers are only 8' away rather than 9' like the fronts. Five full range. The big compromise, for HT (which is not terribly important to me), is that the tv screen is off to the side of the left front speaker, rather than in the middle. This is fine for most tv watching...and my son, who is the big HT buff, doesn't mind it for his DVD's.
Of course it helps to be divorced/single, so I don't have to deal with a wife who didn't much like music in the home.
If you wish to see the setup I came up with, just go to the AA gallery and look up theaudiohiffle's system.
