I am running full range speakers with speaker drivers from the same manufacturer. And have speakers in the ITU configuration. What I did not do is go to identical speakers (little bit tough when the mains are 6 ft tall).Center channel is exactly where your HT display would be. I don't really want to be looking UP at the bottom of the screen simply to make room for a correctly placed (and identical to mains) center (I'd also have to raise the big screen off the floor...). Even if I change speakers, I still want the tweeter at sitting-down ear level.
In my room with my (aging) processor, the ITU configuration creates a "hole" in the surround distribution directly behind the sitting area when watching movies. I don't have 6.1 capability at the moment but if I did, the rear center location would be right at the door entrance to the kitchen and the rest of the house.
Also not willing to "degrade" my 2-channel performance in order to match all 5 channels (amp, ICs, speaker cable/(length?), speakers. And can't afford 5/2x cost to match.
I might change my mind about MC when I get a serious MC source. Until then, I've got other priorities.
