I do agree with John Curl, Direct to Disc is the best as NO tape recorder is used, you get just the musicians

no one can monkey with the sound, musicians play into microphones while the disc is being cut, if some boo-boo's they either have to start over or leave the boo-boo in, this is one secret to why they sound so live, the impact of percussive intruments and transient response have never been equaled by any other method of recording.

That being said there are some KILLER pre-recording Reel to Reel recorded in Real Time (1:1) on 1.5 mill mastering tapes (ie: Sound Ideas, Direct To Tape, Sonar, Ambiphon, Mark Levinson, etc.) even the low speed duplicated Barclay-Crocker tapes sound excellent.
