HowdyI feel the same way, but one thing I have noticed which may or may not be related:
I felt that on the earlier Telarc recordings something was missing, the recordings were kind of dull, until I turned the volume up, then they were much better.
Also at two different friends houses I found that their systems weren't set up with the dynamic range to turn up the Telarc recordings enough. A passive pre and inefficient speakers in one case and a tube amp into medium efficient speakers in the other. In both cases a quick amp swap made a world of difference.
