New high resolution SACD releases, players and technology.

Rolling Stones and other rants

I've had a few beers and this may get a little long. Having said that, it's been a great day! I was in college when ABKCO released the London/Decca albums on CD. They, in a word, sucked. And the masters for the originals pressings got so stepped on over the years that it was hard to find a decent, let alone good, sounding LP of the early Stones. I was both skeptical and excited over the pending releases. I did not want to get caught up in the hype but at the same time found myself perusing the local stores over the weekend looking for stores unaware of street date.
I am stunned by what ABKCO has achieved with these releases. I've listened to Aftermath 3x, Let It Bleed, Big Hits and Beggars 2x and still have 4 unopened. I feel like a teenager again! I'm playing tracks over and over. And these things won't wear out (I hope)! These discs alone have made my SACD player purchase worthwhile.
Now, let's talk marketing. I bought my SACD player (the sony 555 changer) because I needed a new unit and I figured I could utilize the new technology and still have a solid unit for CDs. (I opted for the changer because my wife likes to shuffle, but that's another story.) Within 2 months of purchasing the unit, I came to the same realization as everyone else with a Hi-Rez unit...there ain't no software! With the RS releases imminent, I figured it was a breakthrough and would enable folks who have unwittingly been purchasing SACD technology in their affordable Sony dvd and cd players to experience the great sound offered.
When I picked up the discs today, I couldn't believe there was no SACD marking on the outside of the package. Why? Are they afraid people will not buy them because they may not have the technology? I don't get it. And why do the retailers not know about the SACD layer? Or does retail management know and think it insignificant? (I did make a point when I was in Circuit City to go over to the sales guy in the audio department and tell him. He didn't know, but he was appreciative. At least the CC staff are commissioned; it's obvious the BB folks are not.)
One last thing: does anybody know if they sell plastic sleeve protectors which fit the digipacks? I love the packaging and don't want it to get all scratched up.
If you got this far, thanks for listening. I don't have anyone nearby with SACD technology to share this with. In the mean time, I'm going for another beer and to open Satanic Majesties. Good listening!
